Reinventing the government operations tech stack

Today, we’re officially unveiling Roundtable's white paper, Reinventing the Government Operations Tech Stack.

It’s our complete perspective on why purpose-built isn’t a talking point — it’s our guiding principle for delivering technology that actually works for public servants.

Commercial software tools — from CRMs to document repositories to AI chatbots — were built for private companies with hierarchies, contracts, and linear processes.

The 15 million-plus public servants at more than 90,000 state and local government agencies deserve something built specifically for them, for their agencies, for how they work.

We know government work is fundamentally different from private companies. Public institutions are cross-organizational, the work is omni-directional, and success necessitates constant collaboration across agencies, nonprofits, and community partners.

Our team has worked in close coordination with thousands upon thousands of public servants. Throughout our conversations, what we call the Five Functions of Government emerged — Planning, Communicating, Coordinating, Organizing, and Measuring — manifestations of the unique operating model of government agencies.

We found that when an agency executes the Five Functions well, public servants are better able to fulfill their agency’s mission for their constituents, which is why we’ve built Civic Roundtable’s software platform to align specifically with how public servants work and how government agencies operate.
