In the news: Government Technology Insider on AI built for public servants

Government Technology Insider featured Civic Roundtable Cofounder and CEO Madeleine Smith’s views on what it means to build AI for public servants. Below is an excerpt.

Public servants on the front lines of government agencies are, unsurprisingly, feeling the pressure to utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI). In an Amazon Web Services survey of IT decision makers in government organizations—among others—nearly 90 percent of respondents said it’s important for their organization to adopt generative AI. 

But IT decision-makers aren’t the ones using AI every day to get the work done. That responsibility falls to government employees delivering critical services—from homelessness support and veterans’ healthcare to emergency response and public health. For those of us who’ve used off-the-shelf AI tools that aren’t built for specific workflows, we know how frustrating it can be.  

Yes, AI is amazing, and its potential is vast. However, one simple truth remains: government work is fundamentally different—and demands purpose-built technology.
